The Argentine

Jorge Luis Borges was one of Jorge Bergoglio’s favorite writer’s, “a giant of 20th century literature, a poet and short-story writer whose fantastic stories form the basis of the Latin American tradition of ‘magical realism.’ …Cardinal Bergoglio had known Borges personally. He even persuaded Borges to perform a reading of his works for a class in Santa Fe. ‘He was a very wise man,’ said the future pope–who recalled that the agnotic writer faithfully said an Our Father every night, because he had promised his mother he would do so.”  – From A CALL TO SERVE .
